A look inside

Your family emergency plan

  • Write down a family communication plan and keep a paper copy, as Ready.gov recommends.
  • Pick one out-of-town contact everyone can text or call. Ready.gov says texting often gets through when calls don't.
  • Choose two meeting places: one right outside your home and one outside your neighborhood.

At home

  • Have smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and near sleeping areas (Ready.gov).
  • Test your alarms every month (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission).
  • Know two ways out of every room (U.S. Fire Administration).

In an emergency, call 911. This checklist is general safety information, not legal or medical advice.
